St. Thomas High School’s cheerleading

squads comprise of student-athletes

from St. Agnes Academy, Duchesne

Academy and Incarnate Word Academy.

The cheerleading program consists of

two teams: Varsity and Junior Varsity.

The cheerleaders support St. Thomas

by cheering at all football and basketball

games and by encouraging school spirit

at pep rallies and community events.

This past summer, the STH cheer

teams traveled to Great Wolf Lodge

in Arlington, Texas to attend the

UCA cheer camp, where they earned

significant distinction once again.

Varsity received second place in Game

Day, second place in Cheer and third

place in Extreme Routine. The JV team

won first place in Cheer.

In addition to the team awards, STH

had 9 cheerleaders named as UCA All-

American Cheerleaders. Representing

Varsity are Captain Darby Sorrels,

Co-Captain Maddie Marchbanks,

Parker Badger, Megan Rodriguez,

Carlye Dierckman, and Emily Welter.

This group now has an opportunity to

perform in a New Year’s Day Parade

in London. From JV, Captain Teresa

Garcia, Bella Larimore and Natalie

Cox received All-American honors and

have been selected to perform in the

Houston Thanksgiving Day parade.

We are so very proud of all the STH

cheerleaders for their hard work

and success at camp. This level of

achievement is what STH cheer coaches

have come to expect.

Emily Pittman is head coach of the

STH cheer program for the 4th year.

Assisting her is Stephanie Sorrels, who

is in her first year coaching the STH

team. Their experience performing at

the college level and knowledge of the

competitive cheer and dance scene has

delivered a different dynamic and spirit

at STH sporting events.

“We really want to raise the level...

emphasize more of a game day

environment,” Pittman said. “We

want the girls to really get the crowd

involved...generate more excitement...

not just go out and do their own

individual thing. And we’ve seen that.

Plus, we really want them to understand

the game...know what’s happening on

the field at any given moment and what

cheer to call with it.”

Pittman cheered at Texas State

University; Sorrels cheered at STH in

high school, and both spent years on

the competitive Storm All Stars team

during middle and high school.

“What’s unique about this group of

girls is that they come from three

different all-girl schools,” Pittman said.

“Often times they don’t know each

other starting out the year. We have to

create a bond...have them working as a

team...trusting each other when doing

stunts. And from the beginning we

wanted to generate more of a collegiate

atmosphere here to prepare them if

they ever decide to cheer at the next

level.”
